Message #00246
Status of Agile Project Managment Tool Selection
Hi,
Over the next day, I will be sending a few messages about the Agile Project Management Tool Selection effort. This is instead of trying to cram alot of information into one big message.
Message #1 (This One) - Status Report
Message #2 - Key Requirements Review
Message #3 - Brief summary of the leading candidates (including how to get access)
Message #4 - Next Steps
Status Report
In June, the project managers investigated approximately 10-15 Agile/Kan Ban Tools. These ranged from customized Launchpad to a mature, fully featured scalable application. Also the Project Managers developed a list of requirements against which to measure the candidates. A project manager took 1 (or more) applications to investigate in depth and most were able to setup trial accounts or installations so we could do more than screen shots.
Based on our experience with the tools and using the key requirements, we were able to reduce the number of candidates to 4-5 as of today. Those are (in ascending order of functionality):
Customize Launchpad's Kanban tool
LeanKit KanBan
Ice Scrum
Bright Green
Rally Dev
We also came up with some key questions for the vendors today in an effort to reduce the list further and quickly.
See the Key Requirements message (coming tomorrow) for a review of what is driving the decisions.
While we are impatient to have a tool, any tool in place, we also realize that incorporating a new application into our work flow is a major disruption. We don't want to regret our choice 6 months from now.
If we just throw the application out there, it is very likely that the tool will not be accepted. If we put a tool out that that doesn't really meet any of requirements and can't grow with us, then we've failed.
How do we get down to a final candidate? We will be getting answers to our remaining questions over the next week. We will continue to play in our spare times with our trial accounts. An update our spreadsheet with the results. On the week of July 11th, Joey and I will do another review of the results and make a proposal to the Proj Managers for 1-2 final candidates. Then we will provide this proposal to the management team and come to a decision.
How can you help? Your feedback on the requirements would help to focus on what is important and help us balance cost vs. value, simplicity vs. features etc., maintenance/customization vs. turnkey
Next messages tomorrow.
