[Bug 883633] Re: VDPAU not working anymore after 11.10 upgrade

I think your guess that it's resources is probably right, you might have hit a known issue with the Nvidia drivers:
See
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/285.05.09/README/knownissues.html
and the section "Kernel virtual address space exhaustion on the X86 platform"

Do you see something like this in your dmesg output?

" allocation failed: out of vmalloc space - use vmalloc=<size> to
increase size. "

If so you will probably also see some corresponding error in Xorg log.

The fix is to add "vmalloc=256m" to your GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
parameters in /etc/default/grub. And then do an "upgrade-grub"
afterwards.

I have to do this in my Mythbuntu 11.10 installation with an Asus-Nvidia
GT520 fanless GPU.

Title:
VDPAU not working anymore after 11.10 upgrade

Status in Mythbuntu, Ubuntu derivative focused upon MythTV:
  New

Bug description:
Our MythBuntu media server is an AMD 4050e × 2 with a Gforce 8200 NVIDIA card. We got VDPAU running with 10.04 Lucid, all upgrades worked nicely including 11.04.
With the 3.0 kernel series, VDPAU seems not to be supported properly, apt-get install vdpau-video did not help.
Attached is the logfile: watching a movie, VDPAU does not work, falls back to another renderer for about two minutes, which then gets heavily delayed and picture is frozen.
