It is more likely it is because there are multiple MLT files installed:

/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.7/_mlt.so
/usr/lib/pyshared/python2.7/_mlt.so
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/_mlt.so

If you try playing one of your files with the MLT command line player
melt, then you'll most likely get a crash as well.

$ melt filename.avi
