Not only you have an old version of FFmpeg but especially your version of
MLT.
Going back to your problem, you should update your MLT version following
this FAQ : https://answers.launchpad.net/openshot/+faq/1861.
Regardless, you should think to update your version of Ubuntu, because your
Ubuntu (10.04) will be supported until Raring will be out (13.04) i.e. the
next month.
