The problem has to do with airplay. A workaround is as follows:

Start mythfrontend. In Setup->General go to the 'Airplay Settings' page
and UN-check 'Enable Airplay'. Then exit (you have to again kill
mythfrontend) and restart. Now it no longer hangs on exit.

This was tested on 4 different computers, all running 12.04. It also
behaved the same wether run on GnomeClassic or Cinnamon desktops. I did
not test it on Unity.

  when i close mythtv-frontend it crashes. Mythtv-frontend freeze and I
  have to  1) switch to another window-desktop 2)open a terminal 3)
  xkill the window of mythtv-frontend.
