It works for me with my various file types. I would suggest following
the FAQ here:

Maybe you have an old version of MLT that doesn't like your particular
source files, you may need to transcode them to another format.

  Short and sweet:  Take a video, extract a clip from it, try to reverse
  the clip, and nothing.
