Adding ppa "ppa:sunab/kdenlive-release" and upgrading packages solved
this Openshot problem.

Same problem existed for Kdenlive. See bug #1388438 .

Seems like this bug is related to the MLT package in Ubuntu repository.

Bug description:
  running ubuntu 14:10 on a Lenovo ideapad y580 and ever since upgrading
  to 14:10 from 14:04 openshot has stopped rendering videos with any
  sound whatsoever.

  intel core i7 64 bit
  installed through the ubuntu software center
