i will do that, but before i do, i have a question:  which operating
system do you and the other openshot developers use?

openshot is my tool of choice.  but xubuntu 14.04 seems to be
incompatible with it, and going back to xubuntu 11.10 doesn't work
either as the repository version of openshot requires a different mlt to
the one in  xubuntu 11.10.  i remember, however, that a few years ago
openshot and 11.10 worked fine together.

i would like to switch to the same o/s that you guys use to develop
openshot, as it has to be working better for you than it is for me.  can
you tell me what you use please?

the problem seems to be all about libs.  new editions of them are often
incompatible with apps that used their prior versions, and only a
developer would know how to do a selective update that keeps things
consistent.   apt -get update does all kinds of things i didnt ask it to
do - and many i wish it hadn't!  for example, i have read somewhere that
some things require ffmpeg but 14.04 refuses to allow it in, because it
has been superceded by a newer shinier toy, but unfortunately for me one
that doesnt work with video download helper which i use to get raw
materials for my own creations.

maybe it's time i got a mac....
