In fact, all will change in the next version.  We keep the usual properties of clip but she has been slighty modified, just slighty...
But you don't know, but another one more evolved exist and you could do a lot of things at different part of a clip and for all. 
But you 'll see that on the beta. And like a shame, there are in flotting screens.
So even your solution won't be take, I keep this bug.

  Effects properties are hidden away

  Hi

  
  The properties and effects of a clip are hidden away pretty deeply. My girlfriend is making a school project with OpenShot, and she has some problems with it.

  POSSIBLE SOLUTION:

  Currently the layout of the editor is like this:

  [files/transitions/effects tab] [Viewer]
  [               TIMELINE                                      ]

  You could make the layout like this:

  [[files/transitions/effects tab] [properties of clip] [Viewer]
  [               TIMELINE                                                                             ]

  The properties of the clip being the information about the selected
  clip. (its effects and more) Single left-click on a clip on the
  timeline selects the clip.
