Still the same thing with Ubuntu/Mint/Debian.

You don't have the good version of ffmpeg installed but his fok libav not compiled with some propriataries codecs like h264, mp3, acc,....

VLC got his own codecs, Gnome Player use GStreamer (a multimdia framework) which install too this codecs. OS use ffmpeg which not include by default with this codecs.

Title:
  Hello, my pc I have Lubuntu 14.10, with extras restricted and
  restricted addons installed. I can not export sound. My project
  contains an upper track with 6 photos and 6 transitions plus a lower
  track with background music .mp3. I exported by default, .mpg, .mp4,
  .avi, etc., etc., and while the video is not the case with perfect
  background music to be heard. I tried playing it in VLC and Mplayer
  Gnome and nothing happens with sound. I tried other files with these
  extensions and all work perfect under which generero with Openshot
  Video Editor. Could you tell me which may be lacking to do. Thank you,
