Im' on LInux mint too and I've not this issue. Hovewer, I'm using the free video driver for my ati card too.
The ppa is done for Ubuntu and all is derivated like LInux mint.
Effectively, this version needs a lot of memories depending of your hardware and the kind of file you are using.

  openshot 1.4.3 constantly crashes on my Mint 17 machine

Bug description:
  ihave an ati video driver.  Looked up driver issues on windows about
  mint, nothing.   Openshot will crash mostoften when i use the pointer
  or the scissors.  It will either lockup, crash or freeze my machine.
  I can eventually get a video completed, but it takes quite a while.  I
  looked up some for pay programs but dont see much out there for Mint.
  On your download page, I only see Ubuntu downloads.   Have you given
  up on Mint?     I found the program easy to use, but would love an
  answer if you think you have an answer similiar  to others.   I have
  plenty of memory but i close all programs before attempting editting.
  I can see the video card driver looks current, and frankly, cant think
  of anything else.   Thank you.
