Title:
  All functions extremely slow in v0.75

Bug description:
  I'm running WinXP and just upgraded from an earlier 0.7 version to
  0.75. I'd never had any problems with anything in the earlier version,
  but in 0.75 all functions run extremely slowly for no apparent reason.
  Though filelists download at normal speed, they take between 30
  seconds and a minute to actually open in new windows. Text entered
  into the chat window takes a similar amount of time to actually
  appear. I checked the system process in task manager and its not using
  an unusually large amount of system resources (actually less than the
  previous version), and there's nothing else running that could be
  taking away from its performance.
