poy proposed the following answer:
whitespaces such as the space " ", tabulations, new lines, and any
invisible character are now forbidden. the ™ symbol should work fine.

this was done to avoid impersonators (a user using the same nick as
someone else but that differs only with an invisible / whitespace
character).
