I don't know if it's related to bug 1251911 but doing as the original
report, I get an immediate crash on my Win 8 system. (And the submitted
patch will not cause a crash.) I am re-opening this so we don't lose
track of the diff etc, because I'm unsure of the relation with the other
bug.

  Bugged window opens when closing a pm while notifications are running

Bug description:
  While receiving a pm last night (each line was one word of a sentence
  so it was a lot of messages) I maximized DC and closed the PM, but the
  notifications from the users massive amount of messages were still
  showing balloons and as i closed the pm a new bugged window opened
