Let's not mix up different problems in one bug report - crash is one
thing, freezes and long startup is pretty much another.

Yeah, and this is most probably the reason of all of your later freeze issues. 
Not the total files size, rather the number of files in the queue. If it's more than 10-20k files overall then you'll certainly start to see DC++ lagging when you just go on to hubs with large user count and especially when you search for something and / or many downloads going on... 
Fact is that DC++ is simply not designed to work well with such huge number of queued items.

Title:
  883 version not working properly and crashes

Status in DC++:
  New

Bug description:
  With version 883 and using the settings from version 882 this happened
  twice:

  1 - Open DC++
  2 - connect to first Hub which works and is super quick
  3 - Connect to second hub, stays red for about 30 seconds then connects and turns green
  4 - Connect to 3rd hub, turns red for about a minute, thn turns green and connects
  5 - Crashes silently (no error message)

  I'll move back to 882.
