Hi, I have been contact for OIN several time to sign a non-agression pact about patents in the Linux World (see the mail below). Since we don't have patent, and Canonical are member of the initiative, I think it's safe to also sign it, so I'm going to do so unless someone have an objection about this (I can't see any, but let me know if I miss something). Our mission is to support organizations and projects like Lubuntu developing or using open source and Linux-related technology. This by deterring patent aggression. We do this through a community of more than 1700 members commonly sharing hundreds of thousands Linux-related patents to defend the members from trolling and other forms of aggression. Every member pledges not to assert patents against each other over Linux technology. We also cover 2335 Open Source packages. It is structured to reduce risk on core operating system and middleware technologies. Additionally all members get full and perpetual rights to around 1000 very basic OIN owned defensive patents addressing various other open source technologies in telecommunication, cloud, PHP, eCommerce, biometrics, app building, etc. We want to invite Lubuntu to join our software patent non-aggression pact too. Our community is free to join. The only thing we want is a pledge that Lubuntu would never use patents aggressively against other members within our defensive community. Of course it never will, and that might be a symbolic gesture, but can be also very useful for the users of your code when they see the way to protect themselves from aggression through our community. As an example, many distros have joined our defensive community: Absolute Linux, ArtistX, BackBox, Bodhi, CentOS, Deepin, elementary OS, GeeXboX, Hanthana, KNOPPIX, Kororaa, LuninuX, Parsix, Peppermint OS, PureOS, SalineOS, Simplicity, SolusOS, Sparky Linux, SuperX, Toorox, Turbolinux, ZevenOS, to name just a few of them. You may be interested in our community credentials and to get some more context about our work. I hope we can work together by welcoming Lubuntu to our non-aggression community. Attached is a very short overview of OIN + FAQs, but I am happy to answer any questions and to explain in more detail why the pledge of Linux System and open source patent non-aggression is so important for open innovation.
