A fresh CD did the trick! I'm typing this in Lubuntu 10.10. I didn't have to
add anything to the command line to do the install.

Now to see about installing the nVidia video driver. That hardly ever goes
to completion, but all I have to do is copy a good xorg.conf over, and I'm
all set.

Thanks again for continuing to feed the suggestions until I got a working
system!
