I was able to successfully create a stable Live USB disc with Ubuntu's
"startup disk creator".  I simply selected the "Discarded on shutdown unless
you save them elsewhere" option before making the disk.  See attached

I would suggest that others test this and consider adding this information
to the wiki/release notes.  It worked for me and it might help others.
