Regarding your display issue I can only point you in the direction of what is already in the FAQ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#Are_there_any_radeon_tweaks_I_can_do.3F
 
Play around with EXA and XAA in an xorg.conf and see if it is that.
