Now have a working Lubuntu 12.10 PPC - albeit with yesterday's build.

Turns out it was a case of RTFM

On the PPC FAQ there was a bit about distorted graphics, blank screens, and the lot, which led me to some sample xorg.conf files. One of those for an eMac with Radeon 9200 graphics cards. Downloaded it, moved it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Now all is well with my PPC world.

So I shall amend my bug 1044180 accordingly.
