distro_series vs release

I saw this conversation in my IRC scrollback:

<jtv> It's a bit weird that we're still talking about "distro series"...
I had been angling for a break where we'd just update as much
terminology as we could.
<blake_r> jtv: yeah I would think release would be better

Newer guys are probably not aware of the history around this.

Many years ago, when most of us worked on Launchpad, its code and UI
used to refer to "distro release" everywhere. Mark requested that this
change to "distro series", and that we use the word "release" for point
releases on a series.

So "14.04" is a distro series. "14.04.1" is a distro release.

The code MAAS in maas used to be consistent with "series" everywhere,
but I've noticed lately that "release" is getting used where "series"
would be more appropriate, especially in code done by newer guys who are
unaware of this distinction.

I may go and do a mass-rename of this at some point; I just hope that
release has not been exposed on the API anywhere.

When the CentOS and Windows implementations are done, I don't see this
as being any different for those OSes either.

The upshot: please use "series" and not "release", unless it *is* a
point release.

J.
