[Bug 319221] Re: Option+key combos in "USA Macintosh" keyboard layout don't work

This is apparently not a duplicate of bug 261573. This bug has been
fixed in Jaunty since alpha 4 (if not earlier), whereas bug 261573 is In
Progress.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 261573
   Intrepid: No "AltGr" key defined -> e.g. no "@" symbol with MacBook Pro

** Changed in: xkeyboard-config (Ubuntu)
       Status: Incomplete => Fix Committed

Status in “xkeyboard-config” source package in Ubuntu: Fix Committed

Bug description:
Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Ubuntu 8.10 (all updates installed), MacBook early 2008 model

1. Open the Keyboard settings window.
2. If "USA Macintosh" is not already in the list of available layouts, add it ("+", "By language", "Language: English", "Variants: USA Macintosh", "Add").
3. Select "USA Macintosh" as the default layout.
4. Ensure that "Separate layout for each window" is unchecked.
5. In any text field, using either the left or right Option key, try to type any of the combos specific to the USA Macintosh layout that use the Option key: for example Option 8 for a "•" bullet, Option [ for a "“" quote mark, or Option ; for an "…" ellipsis.

What should happen: The characters are printed.
What actually happens: Nothing.

I don't know whether the keyboard layout is not working at all, or whether just the Option keys are not being recognized. The keyboard layout is printed mostly correctly from the "Print Layout Diagram" button, with the exception that the Option keys are incorrectly labelled as "Alt_L" and "Compose". In a Web browser, Left Option + Left Arrow navigates Back while Right Option+ Left Arrow does not, suggesting that at least the left Option key is at least recognized for some things.
