[Bug 553673] Re: Gedit 'hash' symbol missing in MAC OS X port

Please read my whole comment before you start accusing people of
things...

You need to file the bug against gnome (specifically gedit itself).

Since mactel-support has nothing to do with this software or it's port
to OSX, it is INVALID against mactel-support. That doesn't mean the does
not exist, in fact, I can confirm that it is an issue (The Alt-Option
Key is not recognized at all). mactel-support is a support group for
getting Linux (mainly Ubuntu) running on Apple hardware, thus it is the
wrong project to file your bug against.

Furthermore, since gnome has their own bugzilla bug tracking system,
this is really not a good place to report it either since any developers
will likely not see it. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/

Another option is to read the information given in the README file on the gnome FTP server where this software is distributed since it contains contact information for the person that is porting gedit:
ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/binaries/mac/

Please try not to take offense at everything people do on the internet,
believe it or not, I am just trying to help you get this bug the
attention it deserves.

Bug description:
Hi Gedit community.
[GEdit version: 2.28.3]

First can I say thank you for doing a MAC port, great effort. However, there is a REALLY SERIOUS error in that the 'hash' symbol - alt-3 on UK (British) keyboards does not work. I use gedit every day on my Linux machine and was delighted to discover a MAC port had been developed - yipee, I can do all my editing with the same great tool on all my computers :) However, imagine my surprise when trying the MAC port for the first time and attempting to write C/C++ code, only to find the # symbol is not available!! making (OS X) gedit useless for programming.

I did discover that it is possible to add a # symbol using the built-in TextEdit app, then copy and paste hash symbol into Gedit, but that is really not a reasonable solution.

I realise that the majority of users are on Linux and that Mac users are probably in the minority, but if this can be fixed soon I would be grateful. I would like to use the same great editor on all my machines.

Thanks in anticipation.
Alan Lewis
