Both of these feature requests are actually already possible and both
pretty easy to implement.

For local language changes (e.g. changing friends to colleagues for your
setup only), you can create local overrides in the 'htdocs/local' directory.
The documentation for local customisations of language strings is available
on the Mahara wiki at:

A number of language packs are already available to download, though not
for American English I'm afraid. Details of the available languages and
versions are available from:
  http://wiki.mahara.org/Download_Mahara

If you'd like to create an American English language translation, then you
could offer to translate Mahara.
Details on how to translate Mahara, useful tools and the structure of the
language files is available at:

Bug description:
Change labels for "Friends" to "Colleagues" to help stress this as a professional network, allow US spellings of words.  Perhaps a localization feature?
