  thumb.php is producing unreadable PNG files

Bug description:
  Affects Mahara 1.3.5

  Block thumbnails are not appearing in view edit/creation screen.
  Instead, broken images appear.

  Although I'm using a custom theme, this is reproducible with the Aqua
  and default themes as well.

  When attempting to view the image directly, using the direct URL,
  http://maharadomain.com/thumb.php?type=blocktype&bt=blog&ap=blog, I
  receive the following message in Firefox:

  The image
  “http://maharadomain.com/thumb.php?type=blocktype&bt=blog&ap=blog”;
  cannot be displayed because it contains errors.
