Here are some things I found when testing :

Note: Tested with license metadata turned off.

*** Places where I can navigate away without being prompted to 'stay on
page':

Content -> Résumé -> Introduction: If I choose a gender and try to
navigate away I get prompted to stay. But if I choose a gender, then
save, then choose another and navigate away I don't get prompted to
stay. In fact this trick seems to work for other fields in the 'Personal
information' section.

*** Places where I am prompted to stay when I shouldn't be:

Content -> Files: I upload a file and now I can't navigate away without being prompted to stay. The upload a file auto saves so there shouldn't be anything needing to be saved.
-- this also happens for Group -> Files, Admin -> Institution -> Files, and Admin configure site -> Files

Content -> Résumé -> Interests: I go to edit my interests, add some new
text, decide I don't want changes so hit cancel. when I try to navigate
somewhere else I get prompted to stay. On choosing 'cancel' I shouldn't
be asked to save changes.

Portfolio -> Shared by me: Clicked 'edit access' for a page, then clicked 'add' for Share with Public. Clicked the calendar to add a date, then clicked the remove button (at right) becuase I changed my mind about letting the public see page. When I try to navigate somewhere else I get prompted to stay. The page is (visibly) in the same state as I arrived so shouldn't be prompted to stay.
-- this also happens for Group -> Share page also
-- also happens if I populate a field with a calendar then delete the text from the field.

  When an user navigate away without saving, a pop up dialogue with a
  warning message should be displayed.

  The warning message: "You have made changes - do you want to leave the
  page without saving them?”
