It is possible to not receive forum notifications since Mahara 1.10.
Furthermore, you can filter each notification type and delete
notifications independently.

Bug description:
  This is actually really annoying for forum posts.  Maybe for each
  target you should be able to specify whether you want it to go to the
  activity log as well?
