[Bug 1320099] Re: Profile pages not shared by default
You know, I think more broadly, what could use is a feature to make all
the default user preferences customizable, at the site & institution
level.

Title:
Profile pages not shared by default
Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
Triaged
Bug description:
Hi everyone,
I raised this with Kristina recently and also added a forum entry, but will post a wishlist too.
Basically we are finding students who are new to Mahara adding
assignments and resume details to profile pages.
This presents an obvious problem in that many details are
confidential. Students would not share them with all logged in users
knowingly. This practice exists because the page already exists, users
don't need to learn how to create a page - and - it's already shared
so the teacher can see it.
In this way, some students can get away with not learning how to
create a page or share it in order to submit their first Mahara
assignment. Inadvertently they share everything with everyone.
This isn't a fault with Mahara, however from our point of view we need
to do something to prevent students from making this error.
Therefore our conclusion is that sharing profile pages should be opt-
in - not opt out. Or in the current case they cant even opt out.
The wish would be that Mahara had an option for the administrator to
control whether or not profile pages are opt-in or opt-out - and not
mandate that students share their profile pages. They are still
discoverable in "find friends", and if they like they can allow fiends
to see their profile page.
IF helping users understand this ability to share with friends is
important, then Maybe Mahara could have a series of "first use" pop up
dialogues to help users know what is possible, starting from a privacy
first stance as with other Mahara features.
Cheers,
Shane.
