I just noticed this bug report - This problem was also reported here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/1691329 and was fixed as part of
17.04.3

Please upgrade to 17.04.3 for the fix

  web error log:
  [WAR] 22 (artefact/file/lib.php:670) Undefined property: stdClass::$sum
  PHP Fatal error:  Call to undefined method stdClass::SUM() in /var/applications/maharabase/summer2017-0/mahara/htdocs/artefact/file/lib.php on line 667

  happens on back end so browser is irrelevant, but
  browser: chromium Version 57.0.2987.133

  to reproduce:
  start from moodle [version 3.1.5] with an account having a profile image of one sort or another.
  connect to mahara via xmlrpc
  while on mahara, navigate to any thing under content menu and error message should appear.
