One thing to consider is when we have many unread emails we could do
something like:

99+

rather than trying to handle 100, or 1000 etc

or we could just go for a * to indicate unread messages maybe

  Change position of new email icon and put background behind it

Bug description:
  Mahara 18.10: The inbox icon is now back outside of a menu, but the
  counter for the unread emails is too big and overlays the icon too
  much when going into double digits. Evonne is going to improve on
  that.
