Using the instructions given by the repository tool for MariaDB 5.5, I
just tried installing MariaDB on a new, fully updated, 12.04 machine
that I'd never installed MariaDB on before, and I was successful.

Here are the commands I ran, pasted from the output of the repository
configuration tool: https://downloads.mariadb.org/mariadb/repositories/

sudo apt-get install python-software-properties
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys \
  --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 0xcbcb082a1bb943db
sudo add-apt-repository \
  'deb http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/mariadb/repo/5.5/ubuntu precise main'
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mariadb-server

The commands all completed successfully.

Could you send me the output of the failing apt-get command or other
information that might help us figure out what is failing and why?

Thanks.
