Did you run SET ROLE? Roles are not activated automatically. Users must declare they want to use a particular role.

So the following commands worked:
createroleread_only; grantselectonexample.*toread_only; grantusageonexample.*toread_only; grantselectonexample.*toapp_report@'localhost'; When i logged in as app_report, show databases did not show the example database.  And selects against tables in the example database did not work.

What am I missing?
