in fact each tool has it's own config section in the defaults file while
port is for TCP (127.0.0.1) and socket for socket-connections (localhost)
[mysqld]
socket = /var/lib/mysql/mysql-replication.sock
port = 3307
[client]
socket = /var/lib/mysql/mysql-replication.sock
port = 3307
[mysqladmin]
socket = /var/lib/mysql/mysql-replication.sock
port = 3307
