Of course this was a mailing list test, but here's the answer:

You need to know some OCaml; it's not very difficult, but as a
functional language it's different from the others.
  We're strong programmers doing research, so our style is quite
experimental, and not for the faint of heart. If you aren't scared, be
welcome. And of course you can ask questions.

If you *also* knew some network programming, in addition to OCaml, then
you'd be the ideal contributor; however being a network expert is not
required -- in fact even I am not particularly strong with networks.
