Starting X with "-nolisten tcp" on modern distributions

Hello people. I'm writing this just to keep links to what we found; the
problem is *not* solved on the new debian testing Jean-Vincent is trying
to use now.

The new gdm-setup doesn't even permit to choose. GDM has many different
configuration files with the same content; changing any of them doesn't
seem to have any effect. GDM sucks, and more in general I strongly
dislike the growing dumbing-down trend of recent distributions, even if
we have to live with them for our students' sake; does anybody know how
to solve the problem?
