Farvil's workaround worked for me, I got rid of the white map. I am
using the Medibuntu package in Karmic.

For information, here is my graphic card description from lspci :

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti
4600] (rev a3)

I'm using the nvidia-96 drivers.
