[Question #116428]: Google Earth starts but won't connect with server

New question #116428 on Medibuntu:
https://answers.launchpad.net/medibuntu/+question/116428

Google Earth will start nicely, but the GE screen stays black and after a few minutes I get These messages:

Google Earth Error
Google Earth could not contact http://kh.google.com:80/. Please check your network connection and retry in 15 minutes. For more information visit http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=20717hl=en

and
Warning
Google Earth could not establish a new session with the EarthServer. Although Google Earth will continue to operate, it will only display data available locally (in cache). Google Earth will try to re-establish a session periodically and will inform you when successful.

The site cited suggests making exceptions to a firewall, but I am not aware that I am using one.
I am using (as notified by Google Earth Help>About):

Google Earth
5.1.3533.1731
Build Date
Nov 11, 2009
Build Time
4:39:12 pm
Renderer
OpenGL
Operating System
Linux (2.6.32.0)
Video Driver
NVIDIA Corporation
Max Texture Size
4096x4096
Server
kh.google.com

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really enjoy Google Earth and resent having to boot into Windows to use it.
Thanks.
