Hi
I have done the following to see what/where the problem lies

I have done a fresh install of precise and assed the following packages
as the base of the system : ubuntu-restricted-extras; compizconfig-
setting-manager; htop; ethtool; nfs-common; myunity; secure-delete;
recordmydesktop; and cheese. also did an dist-upgrade then I reboot

when I go to install mplayer mencoder devede via aptitude i get the
following

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libavformat-extra-53 : Conflicts: libavformat53 but 4:0.8.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 is installed.
 libpostproc-extra-52 : Conflicts: libpostproc52 but 4:0.8.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 is installed.
 libswscale-extra-2 : Conflicts: libswscale2 but 4:0.8.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 is installed.

 and then it breaks mencoder when i use devede to encode and author a
dvd
