Another interesting idea would be just to flip what we currently have so that sync notifications are at the bottom right, and then async grow vertically above them. This would make the async notifications more like it IM window itself, where new text appears at the bottom and old text scrolls up, and also keep it all in a consistent, and more likely out of the way place.
