You're looking for "Chill Me Out" from the band "AC/BC".
Would you (as a user) prefer to search for an *.mp3 or *.mp4 in several folders, or wouldn't it be easier to have the computer manager your music for you and you would only have to type in a title or name?

That's where things are heading to on the long run, it's a long-term goal to give the computer something in the near of context awareness, a building block of intelligence.
This is quite close, but implementation is a b*tch as we all know, so i'll rather keep my mouth sh#t until i have more useful news for you ;)

until then, please enjoy the work being done "upstream" by Seth; it's called GNOME Storage:

greetings ;)

The file less paradigm works well for music, where there are only a few ways in which everybody has it organized: artist, album, and genre. This explains why most people want to use a library managing program for their music.

However with documents, the methods of organizing become so complex, a file less paradigm would be hard to create.
