Thanks a lot everyone for all of your feedback!
Here are the SVGs (to be opened in inkscape) if you want to work on it:

I've attached a tweaked version of your original screen 1. I wasn't a fan of the expanding application lists on the other screens as I believe the category button is easier to understand so I've removed the links for them. The main differences between mine and yours are:
1. I've removed the "Other .... applications" links because they duplicate the functionality of the large category button
2. I've removed the Home folder and replaced it with the Pictures folder, because I'd assume that the "Folders" category would take me to my Home.
3. I've removed "Public" as it seems out of place (and not as commonly used as the other items prioritised on this screen)
4. I've aligned Trash along the bottom next to "Get more applications" which seems less cluttered
5. I've reduced the font sizes of the titles slightly, mainly because the SVG was wrapping the text on mine, not sure why :)
Anyway, just thought I'd throw those tweaks out there. Awesome work btw, I'd love the apps place to look like this; displaying the recent apps alongside the categories is genius!
Luke.
