Since we don't see quality browsers crashing in invalid HTML, text
editors when given binary files and etc., I do think that Mudlet should
be able to just ignore the telnet signals it doesn't recognize and go
on.

Telnet on the other hand didn't, it just ignored it - so mudlet should too while it doesn't support it.
