Ok, creating new profiles and logging into avalon still shows terminal-
widths of 0. So this may still happen.

Mudlet snapshot from March 15 2009, debian lenny:

In Avalon (avalon.mud.de) Mudlet seems to send incomplete NAWS statements. Chars end up having terminal widths of 0.

I didn't check our implementation against the standard, but I didn't encounter this problem with other clients.
