Ah, it is still the case for both release_30 and development branches (I
noted grid mode when looking at 2D mapper drawing code and working out
that the setting does need to affect some controls on the dlgMapper
interface)...

  Need a getGridMode() function

Bug description:
  For some inexplicable reason getGridMode() was never made, and so now
  we have no obvious way of calculating from a script how many grid
  areas has a map got.
