Turns out no modules *need* to be loaded.

Ignoring that error, setting the lirc/hardware.conf "module" to null,
and changing the "device" to the proper inputdev (event5) and things
magically work.

Why does the lirc package try and load a module that is not required?

The modules provided by lirc 0.8.6-0ubuntu4.1 do not load in (stock?) lucid kernel 2.6.32-23-generic:

manual insertion agrees:

I'll now try and build from source.

Related to Bug #555906, Bug #513042 and Bug #596569, but I filed this as new since I believe these are binary modules not built on the fly, so the other bug titles don't match this case.
