Also please make sure you install the mythtv-dbg package and enable
apport as described in
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Debugging#Debugging_with_Ubuntu_packages

This will allow a functional backtrace that can be used to debug the
problem.

  Mythtv-backend keeps crashing (mostly when recording)

Status in “mythtv” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: mythtv

backend dies with segfault  error 6 in libc-2.12.1.so. it restarts, breaking recording in 1 or 2 minute chunks. /var/log/messages is full of these:
