Indeed: looks like MyUnity doesn't read icons' status and goes off by
default.

  desktop panel buttons reset

  edubuntu usb live - italian version - After setting all the desktop
  panel buttons on I close myunity and restart it again, some of the
  button are set to off, while, as shown by the attached screen-shot,
  the icons are still present on my desktop.
