We're in the process of modifying our Tilera-specific code to support plugging in different back-ends for doing the actual provisioning. Slides about the proposed design design are available here:

We weren't sure which other back-ends to explicitly support, so we focused initially on Heckle, which Argonne uses to provision their hardware.  Also, after talking to the Dell crowbar guys, we've discovered that they had very different "bare metal" use cases then we did. In order to start capturing these different use cases, I put up a wiki page: http://wiki.openstack.org/BareMetalUseCases. Please add to this if you're interested in a bare metal scenario that isn't represented here.
