Another bit of information:  I had sbackup on my system and that was
working ok.

When I first installed nssbackup, I did so by downloading and installing
using 'make install'.  When it did that, I was getting the same
behavior.  That's when I read through the information and re-installed
using Synaptic.

Sbackup was removed when installing through synaptic.  Could there be
some conflict with something left over from sbackup?
