i think the duplicate status should be swapped with bug #661746.  this
report concerns the latest PPA version, whereas bug #661746 is
concerning whatever outdated version is in the ubuntu repositories.

sorry for being lazy and not replying sooner.  i noticed today there was
an update to 0.11.4 and remembered my bug report.  i've tried my
original backup profile with 0.11.4 and am still getting the same error.

So, i've proceeded to test as a regular user as you suggested.  i opened
up Simple Backup Configuration and clicked on the button to perform a
backup now.  i got the same error, Error in stream protocol: End of
stream

finally, i did try modifying the default profile, so it only includes a
few files.  this backup did complete successfully.  log output:
